Best Time to Visit Northeast India: Month by Month Guide

A month by month guide to Northeast India weather, monsoon, snow, wildlife seasons and festivals, with the best months for each state, as of October 2026.

The best time to visit Northeast India for most people is October to April, when rain eases, skies clear and wildlife parks reopen. The wettest months are June and July, and the high Himalayan parts of Arunachal Pradesh see heavy snow from December to February. Which month is right depends on the state, so this guide goes season by season and then month by month.

Quick facts

  • Main seasons: winter from early November to mid-March, summer from mid-April to mid-October, with the monsoon overlapping the summer months.
  • Monsoon: the southwest monsoon usually arrives around 1 June and delivers about 90 per cent of the region's rain. June and July are the wettest months.
  • Best overall window: October to April.
  • Driest in Guwahati: November and December, each with under 10 mm of rain on average.
  • Snow country: Tawang lists December to February as its heavy snow season.
  • Wildlife: Kaziranga is generally open November to April, with the 2026 to 2027 season already under way.
  • Biggest festivals: Hornbill Festival (1 to 10 December 2026) and the November festival in Shillong.
  • Re-check: dates, road status and park opening as of October 2026 with state tourism departments.

What are the seasons in Northeast India?

Winter (November to February) is the most reliable time for the plains and mid-hills. Guwahati's average daily highs run from about 24 degrees C in January, and rainfall is very low in November and December. Meghalaya's hills are also dry between December and February. The cost is cold in the mountains: Tawang sees sub-zero temperatures in these months.

Spring (March to April) brings warmer days and clear mountain views. The Tawang administration describes March to June as mild, with roughly 10 to 20 degrees C and flowering rhododendrons. Kaziranga's sightseeing is rated best from late February to early April by Assam Tourism.

Monsoon (June to September) is heavy. Mawsynram in Meghalaya, one of the wettest places on Earth, averages over 3,000 mm in both June and July. Guwahati's wettest month is June, with roughly 314 mm.

Autumn (October to November) is a good time to travel. The Tawang district describes September to November as clear and dry. Wildlife parks reopen and festival season begins.

When is the best time for each state?

Assam

November to April for Kaziranga and Manas. The Assam government reopened Manas on 2 October 2026 and Kaziranga for jeep safaris on 3 October, with Pobitora following on 13 October. Brahmaputra floods in the monsoon can affect roads and rail. Rongali Bihu falls in April, and Bhogali Bihu in January. The Kaziranga wildlife post covers safari seasons.

Meghalaya

November to April for comfortable travel and clear views. In the rains the plateau is dramatic but wet. Heavy rain also triggers landslides, and a June 2026 report noted disruptions in Meghalaya. Shillong's Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in November, on 20 and 21 November in 2026 at New Shillong.

Arunachal Pradesh

March to June and September to November are the reliable windows for Tawang, per its district administration. Winter has heavy snow. The Sela Tunnel keeps the route open more reliably. Ziro is best known for its music festival, held 24 to 27 September in 2026. Monsoon floods struck Arunachal in late June 2026. Read the Sela Pass road guide for the Tawang corridor.

Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram

November and December are popular because of festivals. Manipur has been affected by ethnic conflict since 2023, so read the Imphal and Ukhrul guide and check current advisories before planning any visit there. The Hornbill Festival at Kisama runs 1 to 10 December each year. In Mizoram, news reports from September 2026 describe badly damaged stretches of NH 306 and NH 6, so check road status in and after the rains.

Which festivals fall in which month?

Festival dates move with local calendars, so use these as a guide and confirm with the organisers.

  • January: Bhogali (Magh) Bihu, Assam's harvest festival, with community feasts and bonfires.
  • April: Rongali (Bohag) Bihu, the Assamese New Year, which lasts about a week.
  • September: Ziro Festival of Music in Arunachal Pradesh (24 to 27 September in 2026).
  • October and November: Kati Bihu in Assam, a quieter observance.
  • November: Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong (20 and 21 November in 2026).
  • December: Hornbill Festival at Kisama near Kohima, 1 to 10 December 2026. Read the Hornbill Festival guide for logistics and permits.

How does altitude change the picture?

The plains, the Meghalaya plateau and the high Himalaya behave differently. Guwahati sits at around 50 to 680 m and has a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet summers. Mawsynram sits at about 1,400 m, with mean daily highs from roughly 15 degrees C in January to about 23 degrees C in August. Tawang sits near 3,000 m, and Sela Pass is at about 4,200 m.

A practical rule: the higher you go, the more you should favour March to June and September to November, and the more you should avoid peak winter. The lower you go, the more you should avoid June to August.

What if I can only travel in the monsoon?

Pick destinations where rain is part of the attraction, such as Meghalaya's waterfalls. Avoid the high passes and river islands. Book flexible stays, leave a spare day on each leg, and check road and rail updates every morning. In June 2026, floods and landslides disrupted parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim, and a railway bridge in Dhemaji district of Assam partly collapsed after erosion. Wildlife parks are closed, so Kaziranga and Manas are not options then.

What else affects the choice of month?

School holidays and festival weeks fill hotels and flights, so book early for November and December. Start long drives early in any season. Rain can also change plans at short notice: a trip that works on paper in September may need a spare day for landslide clearance. Ask your driver or hotel about the road ahead the evening before you leave.

Which months should I avoid?

June and July are the hardest months for road travel. They are also the wettest months in Meghalaya and parts of Assam. Wildlife parks are closed, rivers swell, and landslides are common. If you must travel then, build in spare days and read the monsoon driving guide.

December to February is difficult for the highest roads in Arunachal Pradesh. The Sela Tunnel helps, but Tawang's snow season still brings occasional closures and very cold nights.

Plan your trip

Pick your state first, then pick the month. If you can only choose one window, aim for late October to early April. For route ideas, see the 7 to 10 day itinerary. Palanquin can arrange a driver or car in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh once you have chosen dates.

Questions answered

What is the best time to visit Northeast India overall?

October to April suits most itineraries. Skies are clearer, rain is lighter and wildlife parks such as Kaziranga are open. November to February is the driest stretch in the Brahmaputra valley and Meghalaya, while March to April is warmer with spring colour in the hills.

Is monsoon a bad time to visit Northeast India?

It is harder, not impossible. The southwest monsoon brings about 90 per cent of the region's annual rain, usually from June, and floods and landslides can cut roads. Some travellers choose Meghalaya in the rains for waterfalls, but should keep flexible plans and check road status daily.

When is Kaziranga National Park open?

The park is generally open for visitors from about November to April and closed during the monsoon. In 2026 the Assam government reopened Manas on 2 October and Kaziranga for jeep safaris on 3 October, so dates vary by year. Confirm with the park authorities before booking.

When does it snow in Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh?

The Tawang district administration lists December to February as the season of heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures, with occasional pass closures. The Sela Tunnel, opened in March 2024, gives all-weather access on the Guwahati to Tawang road, but local conditions still change.

Which month is best for festivals in Northeast India?

November and December are the busiest. Shillong holds a Cherry Blossom Festival in November (20 and 21 November in 2026), and Nagaland's Hornbill Festival is held from 1 to 10 December each year, including 2026.

What should I avoid in June and July?

Long hill drives and river-island trips. June and July are the wettest months across the region, with floods in Assam and landslides on hill highways reported in June 2026 across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya.
