Kaziranga National Park is not just Assam's most famous wildlife destination — it is one of the most extraordinary concentrations of large mammals anywhere on the planet. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, spread across 430 square kilometres of tall elephant grass, marshland and dense tropical forest in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra.

If you are visiting Northeast India and you do not go to Kaziranga, you have missed something fundamental. This is a guide to help you make the most of it.

The One-Horned Rhinoceros — Kaziranga's Icon

The Indian one-horned rhinoceros is the reason most people come to Kaziranga, and for good reason. The park is home to over 2,600 rhinos — more than two-thirds of the world's entire population. They are everywhere: grazing in the grasslands, bathing in the swamps, crossing the road in front of your jeep with absolute indifference to your presence.

Seeing a rhino at close range — close enough to hear it breathe — is a humbling experience. These prehistoric-looking animals, each weighing up to 2,500 kg, once roamed across much of Asia. Kaziranga saved the species from extinction through rigorous conservation.

Best Range for Rhinos: The Central Range (Kohora) and Western Range (Bagori) offer the highest density of rhino sightings. Morning safaris (6:30 AM) are when the animals are most active.

Royal Bengal Tiger — Harder to Find, Worth the Wait

Kaziranga has one of the highest tiger densities in India — approximately 100 tigers across its ranges. But tigers are elusive and the tall grass of Kaziranga gives them exceptional cover. A tiger sighting is never guaranteed, but it is very possible, especially in the Eastern Range (Agaratoli) where the grasslands are more open.

If you are specifically hoping to see a tiger, book the Eastern Range jeep safari and go on two consecutive morning safaris to improve your chances.

Asian Elephant — Gentle Giants of the Grassland

Large herds of wild Asian elephants move through Kaziranga's forests and grasslands. They are commonly seen crossing the NH27 highway that borders the park — drivers on this road know to stop and wait, sometimes for 10 to 15 minutes, as a herd crosses at their own unhurried pace.

The elephant safari is a Kaziranga tradition — riding atop an elephant through the tall grass at dawn, moving silently through the mist while rhinos graze nearby, is an experience unlike any other. Book in advance as slots are limited.

Wild Water Buffalo and Swamp Deer

Wild water buffalo at Kaziranga are not the domesticated kind. These are massive, ancient animals — the largest bovines in the world — found wallowing in the swamps or grazing in large groups. The Eastern Range has the best populations.

Swamp deer (Barasingha) and hog deer are extremely common and often overlooked by visitors focused on rhinos. Look for them in large herds in the open grasslands, particularly in the late afternoon light.

Birds — A World-Class Birding Destination

Kaziranga is home to over 500 species of birds, making it one of India's finest birding destinations. Spot spot-billed pelicans, greater adjutant storks (critically endangered), Pallas's fish eagles, Baer's pochards, and a remarkable diversity of kingfishers, herons and waders.

The Brahmaputra sandbanks visible from the eastern edges of the park attract enormous flocks of migratory birds in winter (November to February).

The Safari Ranges — Which One to Book

Kaziranga is divided into four safari ranges. Each has different characteristics:

Our Recommendation: Book the Central Range for your first safari and the Eastern Range for your second. If you only have one safari slot, go Central.

When to Visit — The Park is Seasonal

Kaziranga is open from November to April. The park closes from May to October due to monsoon flooding — the Brahmaputra regularly inundates large sections of the park, and the animals temporarily migrate to nearby hills. This natural flooding is actually essential to the ecosystem.

November to February is peak season with the highest wildlife sightings and comfortable temperatures. March and April are also excellent and slightly less crowded.
