A first trip to Northeast India works best when it covers one theme and accepts that roads are slower than maps suggest. This guide gives two road itineraries from Guwahati: a 7 day loop through Kaziranga and Meghalaya, and a 10 day route that adds Tawang. Distances are rounded and vary with traffic and weather.
Quick facts
- Start and end: Guwahati, which has the region's main airport and rail links.
- 7 day route: Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Guwahati. No Inner Line Permit needed.
- 10 day route: Guwahati, Tawang, Kaziranga, Guwahati. Needs an Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens.
- Best months: November to April for the 7 day loop. March, April and November for the 10 day route.
- Key distances: Guwahati to Kaziranga about 217 km; Guwahati to Shillong about 99 km; Shillong to Cherrapunji about 54 km; Guwahati to Tawang about 480 km.
- Re-check: park opening dates, permit rules and road status as of October 2026.
How should I plan a Northeast India itinerary?
Choose a theme, then a season, then add days for buffers. Wildlife and culture on the plains belong to winter. High mountain routes belong to spring and autumn. If you travel in the monsoon, expect delays, because heavy rain can block hill roads and flood river valleys. The month by month guide shows which window suits each place, and the monsoon driving guide explains road risks.
Plan no more than four to six hours of driving on most days. Start early, because daylight and mountain weather both favour mornings.
What is a good 7 day Assam and Meghalaya itinerary?
This route suits a first visit. It combines wildlife and temples on the plains with the Khasi Hills.
| Day | Plan | Road distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Guwahati, visit Kamakhya Temple and the Brahmaputra riverfront | City driving |
| 2 | Guwahati to Kaziranga | About 217 km |
| 3 | Safaris in Kaziranga | Local |
| 4 | Kaziranga to Guwahati, onward to Shillong if time allows | About 217 km, then about 99 km |
| 5 | Shillong to Cherrapunji and living root bridges | About 54 km each way |
| 6 | Mawlynnong and Dawki day trip from Shillong | About 90 km to Mawlynnong |
| 7 | Shillong to Guwahati for onward travel | About 99 km |
Day 4 is long because it covers more than 300 km if you finish in Shillong. If you want an easier plan, spend that night in Guwahati and drive to Shillong on day 5, shifting the later days. Kaziranga is generally open from November to April. In 2026 the Assam government reopened Manas on 2 October and Kaziranga for jeep safaris on 3 October. Manas National Park is another Assam option for wildlife in the same season.
In Meghalaya, the living root bridges guide covers the trekking day. The drive from Shillong to Cherrapunji is about 54 km and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Mawlynnong is about 90 km from Shillong, around 2.5 hours, and Dawki is about 30 km further.
What is a good 10 day Tawang and Kaziranga itinerary?
This route fits one high mountain stage and one wildlife stage. It is best in March, April or November.
| Day | Plan | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Guwahati, rest | Collect permits if not done online |
| 2 | Guwahati towards Tawang, overnight at Bomdila or Dirang | First stage of the 14 to 16 hour drive |
| 3 | Cross Sela Pass or the Sela Tunnel to Tawang | Acclimatise on arrival |
| 4 | Tawang Monastery and town | Local |
| 5 | Jaswant Garh or Bumla Pass | Bumla needs a separate permit |
| 6 | Tawang back to Bomdila or Dirang | Return by the same road |
| 7 | Bomdila to Guwahati or Tezpur side | Long day |
| 8 | Guwahati to Kaziranga | About 217 km |
| 9 | Safaris in Kaziranga | Local |
| 10 | Kaziranga to Guwahati and onward | About 217 km |
The Tawang district administration lists the main route as Bhalukpong, Bomdila, Dirang, Sela Pass, Jang and Tawang, with 14 to 16 hours of driving from Guwahati or Tezpur. It advises an overnight stop at Bomdila or Dirang before Sela Pass, which sits at about 13,750 ft by its figure. See the Sela Pass and Bumla road guide for stops and altitude advice.
For permits on this route, Indian citizens apply for the Arunachal Pradesh ILP online or at facilitation centres, as the Tawang administration explains. Bumla Pass needs additional clearance from the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang and the Indian Army.
What are good add-ons for a longer trip?
- Majuli: the river island is reached via Jorhat and a ferry from Nimati Ghat. The Majuli district website lists a ferry schedule of about 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, though sources differ, so confirm timings.
- Nagaland: combine Kohima and the Hornbill Festival in early December. Dimapur is the gateway.
- Mizoram: fly from Guwahati to Aizawl and keep the permits in order.
Each add-on needs at least two extra days. Do not attempt to add them to a 7 day plan.
Which route suits which traveller?
Choose the 7 day loop if you want gentle altitude, short driving days and no high mountain passes. It suits families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants to keep options open for rain. The climate is mild in winter, and the main variable is how much time you spend on Meghalaya's steps and trails.
Choose the 10 day route if you want mountain scenery and a border-region monastery town and can accept long hours on the road. It involves more time in the car, a permit, and a night or two at moderate altitude. It suits travellers who are comfortable with winding roads and who have no recent history of altitude problems. If anyone in the group has a medical condition, ask a doctor before heading above 3,000 m.
What practical points apply to both routes?
- Mobile coverage: it is patchy in the mountains. A 2023 report said Jio reached Dirang and that border villages near Tawang had weak or no signal while new 4G towers were being installed. Coverage may have improved since, but download maps and keep paper copies of bookings and permits.
- Daylight: hill roads are slower after dark and harder to clear if blocked. Aim to finish driving by late afternoon.
- Airport timing: the Guwahati airport is roughly 20 to 28 km from the city depending on where you start, so allow extra time on arrival and departure days.
- Cash and food: carry some cash for small towns, and do not count on late-night restaurants in hill stations.
- Cancellations: park safaris, ferries and festival entry follow their own schedules. Confirm each one a few days before you travel.
What are the common mistakes?
- Trying to cover Tawang and Meghalaya in one week. The Tawang drive alone takes two days each way.
- Ignoring season. Kaziranga is closed in the monsoon, and Tawang can be snowbound in winter.
- Skipping acclimatisation. Sela Pass is above 13,000 ft, which is why the district administration advises an overnight stop first.
- Booking flights the same day as a long road leg. Leave a buffer.
- Forgetting permits. Meghalaya Tourism says Indian nationals usually need no permit (a visitor registration system has been proposed, so confirm), while Arunachal requires an ILP. Read the permits guide and confirm with each state.
Plan your trip
Start by choosing the theme and month, then lock your permits and park dates, and only then book hotels. Read the guide to reaching Northeast India via Guwahati to pick flights and trains. For the Tawang leg, Tawang car rental has route details. Palanquin can arrange a driver or car for either route in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
Questions answered
How many days do I need for Northeast India?
Seven days is enough for one theme, such as Kaziranga plus Meghalaya. Ten days allows a longer route such as Tawang plus Kaziranga. Distances look short on a map, but hill roads are slow, so do not pack in more than one major destination per two days.
What is a good 7 day itinerary from Guwahati?
A common loop is Guwahati for one night, Kaziranga for two nights, then Shillong and Cherrapunji for three nights, and back to Guwahati. It covers wildlife, Kamakhya, living root bridges and the Khasi Hills, and avoids permits. It works best from November to April.
How long does the Guwahati to Tawang drive take?
The Tawang district administration gives 14 to 16 hours of driving on the Guwahati route and recommends staying overnight at Bomdila or Dirang to acclimatise before Sela Pass. Most itineraries split it over two days.
Can I combine Kaziranga and Tawang in one trip?
Yes, but the season windows only overlap partly. Kaziranga is generally open November to April, and Tawang has clear roads in March to June and September to November, so March, April and November are the practical months to combine them.
Do I need permits for these itineraries?
The Assam and Meghalaya loop needs no Inner Line Permit, though Meghalaya has discussed a visitor registration system, which you should confirm with Meghalaya Tourism. The Tawang route needs an Arunachal Pradesh Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens, and Bumla Pass needs extra permission.
Is a self-planned itinerary better than a fixed package?
Neither is better in general. A fixed plan saves effort, but a flexible one lets you adjust for landslides, floods or snow. Whichever you choose, leave buffer days and avoid booking tight connections to flights.
