An EV road trip in Northeast India is possible, but only on carefully chosen routes. Around Guwahati, along the Brahmaputra valley and up to Shillong, charging is realistic if you plan each stop. Deep into the hills of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur or Mizoram, public charging is thin and often unconfirmed, so a petrol or diesel vehicle is the safer choice. This guide is current as of October 2026; charger availability changes quickly, so re-check before you go.
Quick facts
- Region: Eight states, with most public chargers concentrated in Assam, especially Guwahati.
- Best-supported area: Guwahati and nearby cities, then the Assam highway corridors (NH 27, NH 715) and the Guwahati to Shillong road.
- Least-supported areas: High-altitude and remote roads in Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur, where verified fast charging is hard to find.
- Best months: November to March for dry roads in the plains; avoid planning tight charging schedules in heavy monsoon (June to September) when landslides and detours are common.
- Permits: Several states need an Inner Line Permit or similar, whatever you drive. See permits explained.
- Typical trip that works: A 2 to 4 day loop from Guwahati, with no day longer than about 250 km on plains roads.
- Gateway: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and Guwahati railway station.
How many public chargers does Northeast India actually have?
The region has a small share of India's charging network. A July 2026 Down To Earth report put the Northeast at about 1% of the country's charging infrastructure.
Ministry of Heavy Industries figures, as of 1 March 2026 and quoted by Eastern Mirror, give installed and operational public stations by state:
| State | Installed | Operational |
|---|---|---|
| Assam | 526 | 461 |
| Manipur | 71 | 64 |
| Tripura | 63 | 55 |
| Arunachal Pradesh | 55 | 46 |
| Nagaland | 53 | 44 |
| Meghalaya | 80 | 44 |
| Mizoram | 30 | 15 |
| Sikkim | 13 | 12 |
Two points matter for a traveller. First, a station that is installed may not be working, as Meghalaya and Mizoram show. Second, these counts do not tell you where the stations are, what power they deliver or whether they suit a car. Many public points in the Northeast are meant for two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
Which corridors are realistic for an EV?
Guwahati to Shillong and back. The road (NH 6; older sources call it NH 40) is roughly 100 km and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours by car. This is the most workable trip. Read the Guwahati and Shillong charging guide for what is known about chargers there.
Guwahati to Kaziranga and Jorhat. In 2023, BPCL announced EV chargers at 18 of its fuel stations along NH 27 (Srirampur to Guwahati), the Guwahati to Dibrugarh route and the Mangaldoi to Bogibeel stretch, spaced within about 100 km of each other. A Plus Charge, a Guwahati-based operator, is reported by Down To Earth to be building a Siliguri to Tinsukia corridor with chargers every 60 to 70 km. Neither claim tells you today's uptime, so verify each stop.
Into Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur or Mizoram. Arunachal reports 55 installed stations in the state data above, but that does not mean one at every halt on a route such as the Tawang road. Treat these routes as unplanned for EVs unless you personally confirm each charger. For the road itself, see Sela Pass and Bumla Pass road guide.
How much range will an EV lose on hill roads?
Plan for real-world range well below the claimed figure. A consumer guide on Indian conditions says real-world range is typically 70 to 80% of the claimed number and suggests planning charging stops at 60 to 70% of realistic range. That advice is not specific to the Northeast, but it is a sensible baseline.
The factors that matter most here:
- Speed: Faster driving uses more energy per km. The same guide says that at 120 km/h many EVs use roughly 25 to 30% more than at 80 km/h.
- Climbs and descents: Long climbs, as on the way to Shillong, use a lot of energy. Regenerative braking recovers some on the way down, but not all.
- Air conditioning and heating: Cooling in humid Assam costs range. The guide estimates 8 to 15% in Indian summer.
- Cold: In cold conditions studies cited by PBS found range losses of about 10 to 36%, and fast charging is slower when the battery is cold. This matters more at higher elevations in winter than in Guwahati.
What is the best way to plan an EV trip here?
- Choose a short loop. Keep daily distance to what you can finish with at least a third of the battery left.
- Confirm every charger the day before. Use the operator's app or call the host. A charger that appears on a map can be offline.
- Check the connector. Make sure the charger type matches your car. Many Northeast chargers target small vehicles.
- Stay where you can charge overnight. Ask a hotel whether it has a socket or a charger you can use, and what it costs. Do not assume.
- Build a fallback. Know the nearest alternative charger and the nearest town with a workshop that can help.
- Avoid night driving and monsoon landslide zones. Detours eat range. See road conditions and monsoon driving.
What does the policy side mean for travellers?
Government rules are pushing more public chargers. India's Ministry of Power 2024 guidelines aim for a charging station about every 20 km on both sides of highways, with fast chargers about every 100 km. That is a target, not a guarantee of what exists on a given road. State incentives affect who buys EVs, not whether a charger works on your route. For a dated summary, see EV policy in the Northeast states.
Should you drive an EV, hire one or choose petrol or diesel?
For a first Northeast trip that includes remote hill sections, petrol or diesel is the more flexible option. For a city and nearby day trip, an EV can work well and is quiet and smooth on hill roads. A fuller comparison is in electric vs petrol car hire in the Northeast.
What would a workable EV itinerary look like?
The safest pattern is a hub-and-spoke trip based in Guwahati rather than a one-way journey across states. Sleep in Guwahati, take day trips that return to the same charger and keep each day well within range.
- Day trip to Shillong: About 100 km each way. Start fully charged and confirm a charger in Shillong, or make sure the return fits in the remaining battery with a wide margin.
- Kaziranga side trip: BPCL's 2023 announcement placed chargers on fuel stations on the Guwahati to Dibrugarh corridor, which includes the Kaziranga area. Confirm the specific station before leaving.
- City days: Guwahati sightseeing suits an EV well because distances are short and stops are many. See the Guwahati 3 day itinerary and the Shillong 3 day itinerary for ideas on what to include.
Avoid stacking a long hill drive on top of a long plains day. Range anxiety grows fast when two hard days follow each other and a charger fails.
How fast is charging and how long should you budget?
Speed depends on the charger and the car. BPCL's 2023 corridor announcement described fast chargers that give about 125 km of range in roughly 30 minutes, which is a useful rule of thumb for planning a stop, not a promise for every station. Slow AC points can take many hours and suit overnight stays rather than road stops. In cold conditions charging slows further, as PBS notes.
Budget a full hour for any charging stop on a day trip, including the time to find the charger, start the session and wait. If the plan only works when every charger is free and working, the plan is too tight.
What are the safety and etiquette points?
- Do not drive at night on hill roads to reach a charger. Fog, rain and landslides are real on Meghalaya and Arunachal roads.
- Do not block a charger once your session ends. Many sites have only one or two points.
- Keep respect for hosts. If a hotel lets you use a socket, ask first and agree on the charge.
- Check road status with local authorities before leaving, as detours change the range you need.
Remember too that the region is rural beyond its cities. A breakdown far from a town means waiting for help, so tell someone your route.
Plan your trip
Pick one corridor, confirm every charging stop in advance, and keep a petrol or diesel fallback in mind for anything beyond Guwahati's immediate region. If you would like a driver or car for a Northeast route, Palanquin can arrange vehicles that start from Guwahati.
Questions answered
Is it possible to do an EV road trip in Northeast India?
Yes on short, planned routes around Guwahati, such as Guwahati to Shillong and back or Guwahati to Kaziranga, if you check chargers in advance. Long trips into Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur or Mizoram are much riskier because public fast chargers are sparse and often not confirmed.
How many public EV charging stations does Northeast India have?
Figures differ by source and date. Ministry of Heavy Industries data quoted in July 2026 listed 526 installed stations in Assam (461 operational), 80 in Meghalaya, 63 in Tripura, 55 in Arunachal Pradesh, 53 in Nagaland, 71 in Manipur, 30 in Mizoram and 13 in Sikkim. Many are in cities, and operational counts are lower than installed counts.
Does hilly terrain reduce EV range in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh?
Climbing uses much more energy than flat driving, and regenerative braking on descents returns only part of it. Plan for noticeably less range than the claimed figure on hill roads, and keep a large battery buffer.
Are there fast chargers on the highways of Assam?
Some corridors were announced, such as BPCL fast chargers at 18 fuel stations on NH 27 and the Guwahati to Dibrugarh route in 2023, and a charging operator is reported to be building a Siliguri to Tinsukia corridor. Which chargers work today must be checked on a live map or the operator's app.
What should I do if I run out of charging options mid-route?
Plan so that you never rely on one charger, and carry a fallback such as a second route, a nearby town with a slow AC point or a plan to switch to a petrol or diesel vehicle. Share your route with your hirer or host and avoid driving in the dark on hill roads to hunt for a charger.
