Shillong 3-Day Itinerary: Sights, Food and Day Trips

A practical 3-day Shillong plan: Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Don Bosco Museum, Umiam Lake, Laitlum and Mawphlang, plus food and the road from Guwahati.

Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, works well as a three-day base for city sights, a viewpoint, a waterfall and one or two nearby excursions. It is about 99 km from Guwahati and an easy first stop in the Khasi Hills. This plan keeps each day to a sensible number of stops, based on distances published by Meghalaya Tourism.

Quick facts

  • Where: East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.
  • From Guwahati: About 99 km on NH 6, usually 3 to 3.5 hours by road.
  • Airport: Shillong Airport (Umroi, near Barapani) is domestic; Veena World lists direct flights from Kolkata and Jorhat. Guwahati has the main connections, so check current airline schedules.
  • Railway: No rail service in Shillong. Guwahati is the nearest railhead.
  • Best months: Incredible India suggests September to May; Meghalaya Tourism favours October to March for viewpoints.
  • Permits: None for Indian nationals generally; foreign nationals register on arrival (Meghalaya Tourism, as of October 2026).
  • Time needed: 3 days for the city and short excursions; 5 to 6 days with Sohra and Dawki.
  • Helpline: 1800 599 2026 (Meghalaya Tourism).

How do you reach Shillong from Guwahati?

The direct route is NH 6, about 99 km. Veena World gives a typical 3 to 3.5 hours by taxi, bus or private car. The road passes Umiam Lake, which Meghalaya Tourism places about 15 km before Shillong. Trains do not run to Shillong, so travellers arriving by rail get off at Guwahati. If you are building a wider trip, the Guwahati gateway guide explains flights and rail options. For a ready road transfer, see the Guwahati to Shillong cab page.

How should you plan around the weather?

Rain peaks from June to September, and fog can hide the view from Shillong Peak in that period, according to Meghalaya Tourism. Elephant Falls is at its fullest in the monsoon. In winter the days are cooler and clearer, but this is peak season, so book hotels early. The Meghalaya best time guide has more on the seasons.

Day 1: What are the best city sights in Shillong?

Start in the centre, where most sights are close together.

  • Ward's Lake and the Botanical Garden: A colonial-era lake with gardens, listed by Incredible India. Allow 1 to 2 hours.
  • Police Bazar: The main shopping and eating area. This is a good place to try your first jadoh or momos.
  • Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians: Listed by Incredible India among Shillong's landmarks; Meghalaya Tourism's itinerary gives its hours as 7 am to 6:30 pm.
  • Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures: In the Mawlai area, about 3.4 to 3.5 km from Police Bazar. Meghalaya Tourism lists 17 galleries on the cultures of Northeast India, with a rooftop skywalk. It is closed on Sundays, and hours differ slightly between summer and winter, so check before you go.

Day 2: Which viewpoints and waterfalls should you see?

  • Umiam Lake (morning): A reservoir created by a dam on the Umiam River in the early 1960s. It is about 15 km from Shillong on NH 6. Meghalaya Tourism lists boating, Lumpongden Island and sunset views.
  • Shillong Peak: At about 1,965 m, it is the highest point in Meghalaya, about 10 km from the city. It sits inside an Indian Air Force radar station, so carry valid photo ID and expect to leave your camera at the gate. Fog often hides views from June to September.
  • Elephant Falls: About 12 km from Shillong, a three-tier waterfall with railed walkways. The tourism site lists opening from 6 am to 6 pm, and the drive takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

This day is a loop of roughly 40 to 50 km, so you can do it unhurried if you start by 9 am.

Day 3: Where can you go for a day trip from Shillong?

Choose one of these, depending on your interests.

Laitlum Canyons. The name means "end of the hills". It is about 24 km from Shillong and best seen on a clear morning or at sunset, since mornings can be foggy. Meghalaya Tourism lists a guided experience package, but you can also go by taxi.

Mawphlang Sacred Grove. About 25 km south-west of Shillong. The grove is a protected community forest, and Meghalaya Tourism says visitors may not take anything away, "not even a pebble or a twig". A local guide helps you understand the place. Shared sumos run from the Bara Bazaar stand but may not operate late in the day.

Sohra (Cherrapunji). About 55 km from Shillong, with waterfalls and caves. This is better as a night away; see the living root bridges guide and the caves guide.

Dawki and Mawlynnong. A long day or an overnight; read the Dawki and Mawlynnong guide before choosing, because Mawlynnong closes to day visitors on Sundays.

What else can you add if you have time?

These stops appear in Meghalaya Tourism and Incredible India listings and fit into gaps between the main days:

  • Laitkor Peak viewing point: Meghalaya Tourism's one-day itinerary lists opening from 9 am to 3:30 pm, closed on Wednesdays, with September to May as the better months.
  • Shillong Golf Course: Listed with hours of 7 am to 6:30 pm and no entry fee in the same itinerary. Check the current rules for visitors.
  • Wankhar Entomology Museum: Known as the Butterfly Museum, listed by Incredible India.
  • All Saints' Church and Sweet Falls: Both listed by Incredible India as Shillong attractions.
  • David Scott Trail: A trek of about 16 km in the East Khasi Hills, reachable from Shillong Peak according to Meghalaya Tourism. Treat it as a separate full-day plan, ideally with a guide.

What should you eat in Shillong?

Incredible India lists these dishes:

  • Jadoh: The signature dish, flavoured with mint and ginger.
  • Dohneiiong: Pork in a thick gravy of black sesame and onion paste.
  • Dohkhlieh: A pork salad with onions and spices.
  • Tungrymbai: Fermented soybean gravy, usually with rice or bread.
  • Pukhlein: A fermented rice snack.
  • Momos: Steamed dumplings with chilli chutney.

The same page names Police Bazar and Iewduh market as places where vendors sell local food. For cafes, look at recent reviews, since individual places open and close often. Vegetarians should ask for dishes without meat, as many Khasi specialities are pork-based.

How do you get around Shillong?

Taxis are the simplest way to link several sights in a day. Shared sumos serve routes such as Mawphlang, from the Bara Bazaar stand, and Dawki, from Iewduh. Fix a rate before you start a hired taxi, and check that your driver knows where the sights are. Mobile signal is good in towns and thinner in remote areas, according to Meghalaya Tourism.

What should you pack for Shillong?

Meghalaya Tourism advises packing for the season. In the monsoon, bring a waterproof bag and jacket, an umbrella, anti-slip shoes and quick-drying clothes, and watch daily forecasts for heavy-rain and landslide warnings. In winter, bring warm clothing and a waterproof layer for showers. A small health kit with pain relievers and insect repellent is also recommended. Carry original photo ID throughout, both for Shillong Peak and for general safety on longer excursions.

How can you travel respectfully?

Shillong Peak is sacred to the Khasi people, and Meghalaya Tourism notes a small shrine at the summit where spring rituals are held. Behave quietly at religious and community sites, follow rules such as the ban on removing anything from the Mawphlang grove, and ask before photographing people. Meghalaya Tourism also advises hiring a local guide or travel companion who knows the language and terrain, which is useful on days outside the city.

Plan your trip

A relaxed order is city sights on day 1, the lake, peak and waterfall loop on day 2, and a half-day excursion on day 3. Book rooms early from November to February, and check road and weather conditions with Meghalaya Tourism before any trip to Sohra. Palanquin can arrange a driver or car for the Guwahati to Shillong route and local sightseeing.
