Dawki is a border town on the Umngot river in West Jaintia Hills, known for clear water and boat rides, and Mawlynnong is a village in East Khasi Hills known for its cleanliness rules. Most visitors see both from Shillong, about 76 to 85 km away, either in one long day or across two. Go between November and April for the clearest river, and avoid Sundays if you are visiting Mawlynnong for the day.
Quick facts
- Dawki: Border town in West Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, on the India to Bangladesh border.
- Shnongpdeng: River village about 8 km north of Dawki, where much of the camping and boating is based (Meghalaya Tourism).
- Mawlynnong: East Khasi Hills, about 76 km from Shillong and 103 km from Shillong airport (Meghalaya Tourism).
- Dawki from Shillong: About 82 to 85 km, around 3 hours via NH 206; about 196 km from Guwahati airport and 173 km from Guwahati railway station.
- Best months: Roughly November to April for clear water; the monsoon is better for waterfalls than for the river.
- Permits: Indian nationals generally need no permit for Meghalaya. Carry photo ID near the border (as of October 2026).
- Time needed: At least 2 days if you want boating and water activities; a day trip from Shillong is possible but rushed.
- Helpline: 1800 599 2026 (Meghalaya Tourism, toll-free).
How do you reach Dawki and Mawlynnong?
From Guwahati, first reach Shillong (about 99 km on NH 6, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours; see the Shillong 3-day itinerary for that leg). From Shillong:
- To Mawlynnong: Meghalaya Tourism says shared sumos and taxis run from Shillong to Pynursla, and from there you hire a local cab for the last stretch. A private car or tour package from Shillong is simpler.
- To Dawki: Meghalaya Tourism suggests NH 206 from Shillong, about 3 hours. Wikipedia notes shared transport leaves from Iewduh in Shillong in the morning.
Published distances differ by a few kilometres between sources, so treat them as approximate. Road work between Shillong and Dawki has been under way, which can slow the drive. Start early and keep a buffer for delays, especially in the rains. The guide to monsoon driving in Northeast India covers what to expect when landslides or rain slow the roads.
What is Mawlynnong and what can you see?
Mawlynnong is a Khasi village that became known as one of the cleanest in Asia after a travel magazine named it so in 2003, according to Outlook Traveller. Bamboo dustbins stand outside houses, plastic is discouraged, and residents share the work of keeping roads clean.
According to Meghalaya Tourism, the main sights are:
- Sky View: A bamboo viewing tower with views across the Bangladesh plains.
- Nohwet living root bridge: A single-decker bridge a short walk from the village; see the living root bridges guide for how these are grown and how to behave on them.
- Church of the Epiphany: A century-old church in a garden setting.
- Village streets: Stilted bamboo houses and tidy lawns, best seen on foot.
Allow 1 to 2 hours in the village itself, longer if you add the nearby Riwai bridge.
The Sunday rule for day visitors
From January 2026 the village council (Dorbar) closed Mawlynnong to day visitors on Sundays, because Sunday is a church day for most residents. Shops, food stalls and washrooms close too. Guests who stay overnight in a guest house or homestay are exempt. Whether the nearby Riwai bridge is open to day visitors on Sundays is not clear from the reports, so ask your host. What is special about the Umngot river at Dawki?
The Umngot separates the Khasi and Jaintia Hills before flowing into Bangladesh. Meghalaya Tourism and local operators promote it for exceptionally clear water, where boats can appear to float. The Dawki suspension bridge across the river was built by the British in 1932, according to Wikipedia, and still carries traffic.
Typical activities, per Meghalaya Tourism:
- Wooden boat rides on calm stretches
- Snorkelling, kayaking and swimming
- Riverside camping at Shnongpdeng and Darrang
- Forest trails to Kudengrim village, known for root bridges and waterfalls
Incredible India also mentions an annual boat race at Umsyiem in March and April.
Is the water clear right now?
Clarity depends on season and recent works. A February 2026 report from News Arena India said that since late 2025 parts of the river had turned murky because of soil and debris from the Shillong to Dawki road-widening project, and that bookings had suffered. Conditions can change, so ask your camp or boat operator for the current state before paying for a multi-day stay.
How should you behave near the border?
Dawki is an active trade point, with an Integrated Check Post leading to Tamabil in Bangladesh. The border area is regulated, so:
- Carry original photo ID.
- Do not try to cross or approach border fencing and posts, and follow instructions from security personnel.
- Avoid flying drones or photographing security installations unless you have permission.
- Remember that Bangladesh is visible from some viewpoints, but visiting it needs a visa and immigration clearance.
How to stay safe on the water
Meghalaya Tourism says water activities should be done with expert supervision and safety gear. In practice:
- Wear a life jacket on boats and while swimming.
- Avoid boating and river swimming after heavy rain, when currents rise and the water turns muddy.
- Confirm boat rates and duration before you step in.
- Carry cash, since digital payments and mobile signal can be unreliable in the valley.
- Check the forecast, as Meghalaya Tourism advises watching for heavy-rain and landslide warnings.
What should you pack?
Meghalaya Tourism's general advice for the state applies on this route:
- In the monsoon: a waterproof bag and jacket, an umbrella, anti-slip shoes, quick-drying clothes and a basic health kit with pain relievers and insect repellent.
- In winter: warm layers, plus an umbrella or waterproof jacket for showers. Winter is also the busy season, so book rooms and camps early.
- Always: original photo ID, cash in small notes, a power bank and any prescription medicines. Meghalaya Tourism says connectivity is good in main towns but limited in remote areas, so download offline maps before you leave Shillong.
How does this trip fit with the rest of Meghalaya?
Dawki and Mawlynnong sit in the south of the state, so they combine naturally with the Sohra area. The Meghalaya Tourism sample 3-day itinerary covers Shillong, Sohra, Mawlynnong and Dawki in three days. That is a quick pace, and the plan above gives the river more time. If you have a week, add Shillong sights, the Nongriat trek and the Jaintia Hills caves. The Shillong 3-day itinerary and the caves guide show how to build those days around the same base.
Where to stay and how to plan your days
Shnongpdeng and Darrang have camps and resorts, and Mawlynnong has guest houses and homestays. A relaxed plan is:
- Day 1: Shillong to Mawlynnong, arriving before midday, with an overnight stay in the village. Overnight guests are not affected by the Sunday rule.
- Day 2: Drive to Dawki, take a river ride, then camp or stay at Shnongpdeng.
- Day 3: Return to Shillong, or continue to Sohra for the caves.
Plan your trip
Fix the dates around November to April, avoid Sundays for a day visit to Mawlynnong, and confirm river conditions with your camp. Book accommodation early in winter, which Meghalaya Tourism flags as peak season. For help with road transfers, the Guwahati to Meghalaya cab page outlines the route, and Palanquin can arrange a driver or car for the Shillong, Mawlynnong and Dawki circuit.
Questions answered
How far is Dawki from Shillong and Guwahati?
Meghalaya Tourism puts Dawki and Shnongpdeng at about 82 to 85 km from Shillong (roughly 3 hours by road) and about 196 km from Guwahati airport. Allow a full day from Shillong, and longer from Guwahati.
Can tourists visit Mawlynnong on Sundays?
Since January 2026 the village council has closed Mawlynnong to day visitors on Sundays, as reported by PTI and Outlook Traveller. Guests staying overnight in a homestay or guest house are exempt, so plan day trips for Monday to Saturday.
What is the best time to visit Dawki for clear water?
Roughly November to April is when the Umngot river is usually clearest. Meghalaya Tourism names winter, pre-monsoon and autumn as the best periods for clear water, while monsoon rain makes the river muddy and boating riskier.
Can you cross into Bangladesh from Dawki as a tourist?
Dawki has an Integrated Check Post for road trade with Tamabil in Bangladesh, but it is an international border, not a tourist crossing. Do not plan to cross without the proper visa and immigration clearance, and carry photo ID near the border.
Is there an entry fee for Mawlynnong?
Meghalaya Tourism does not list a fee for the village. A 2017 Outlook Traveller guide reported small charges for the root bridge and Sky View, so carry cash and expect a modest local fee to be collected.
How many days do you need for Dawki and Mawlynnong?
Meghalaya Tourism suggests at least 2 days if you want boating and water activities at Dawki and Shnongpdeng. A single long day trip from Shillong can cover Mawlynnong and Dawki, but it leaves little time at either.
