Guwahati has public EV charging, Shillong has a smaller and less documented network, and the NH 6 road between them has no charger that this guide could verify. The distance is short, about 100 km, so most electric cars can make the trip if they start with a good charge, but confirm a charger at each end before you set out. Information here is as of October 2026; operators open and close sites often.
Quick facts
- Route: Guwahati to Shillong on NH 6, roughly 100 km, about 2.5 to 3 hours by car.
- Guwahati: The city has charging points from several operators, concentrated in urban areas. Official counts for Guwahati alone were not found.
- Shillong: A 2021 plan by Power Grid and the Meghalaya Government covered 11 stations, but present status is not confirmed.
- Verified en-route chargers on NH 6: None confirmed for this guide.
- Best months for the drive: November to March for clear roads; monsoon (June to September) can bring fog, rain and landslides.
- Nearest transport hubs: Guwahati airport and railway station. Meghalaya has no railway line of its own, and the nearest station to Shillong is in Guwahati.
- Permits: None checked for this guide; confirm current Meghalaya entry rules with the state tourism department before travel.
What do we know about EV charging in Guwahati?
Several dated facts are published, but none gives a current station list.
- FAME-II sanction (2022): The Ministry of Heavy Industries sanctioned 20 charging stations in Assam, 10 in Guwahati and 10 in Jorhat, under the second phase of FAME, reported in March 2022.
- Tata Power MoU (2023): Tata Power EV Charging Solutions and the Assam Government signed an agreement in October 2023 for a pilot of 10 advanced chargers at 10 locations in Guwahati, with Dispur named as one planned area.
- A Plus Charge and Ather (2025): In July 2025 the Guwahati-based operator A Plus Charge and Ather Energy announced fast chargers starting in Guwahati, Shillong, Dibrugarh and Siliguri. The reports say the chargers support the LECCS standard for light electric vehicles, so they are aimed mainly at scooters and similar vehicles rather than cars.
- State picture: Ministry data quoted in July 2026 listed 526 installed public stations in Assam, of which 461 were operational. Down To Earth the same month gave no figure for Guwahati alone.
These are announcements and sanctions, not confirmation that a given charger is working today.
What about Shillong and Meghalaya?
In 2021, reports said Power Grid Corporation would build a station at its Lapalang office complex and that an agreement covered four sites in Shillong: the Power Grid complex, an MTC warehouse at Demthring, an MTC parking lot at Khyndailad and the Polo parking lot. Eleven stations were planned in total, with five public and six at government establishments. The report is from 2021 and does not confirm they were built.
Meghalaya's cabinet approved a new EV policy in July 2026, and the government said it is identifying locations for commercial charging stations. Ministry data from March 2026 lists 80 installed stations in Meghalaya, but only 44 operational. That gap is a good reason to confirm a charger before you depend on it. The new policy is covered in EV policy in the Northeast states.
Is there charging along the Guwahati to Shillong road?
This guide could not find a verified, current public fast charger on the NH 6 stretch. Do not assume one exists at Umiam, Nongpoh or any other halt. The road gains a lot of height, which raises energy use on the way up and returns some through regenerative braking on the way down.
A practical rule: treat the trip as a round trip needing enough battery to reach Shillong, drive around and still return or reach a charger you have confirmed. A full route-planning discussion is in the EV road trip guide.
How do you check a charger is working?
- Use the operator's app or hotline on the day. Map listings can be stale.
- Call the venue if the charger is at a hotel, mall or office, and ask whether it is open to the public and during which hours.
- Check the connector and the maximum power against your car's inlet.
- Check the price displayed in the app. The Ministry of Power 2024 guidelines set service charge ceilings reported as Rs 3 to 4 per unit for AC and Rs 11 to 13 per unit for DC, excluding GST and land cost, in force until March 2028. Real prices vary by operator.
- Keep a backup site within reach in case the first is out of service.
How should you plan a one-day or two-day EV trip to Shillong?
- Leave Guwahati fully charged. Use a charger you have confirmed or an overnight socket at your hotel.
- Drive steadily. Higher speed uses more energy, and uphill stretches add to it.
- Charge in Shillong, where confirmed, while you sightsee, and look for a hotel that allows charging.
- Start the return in daylight so you are not driving hill roads at night with low charge.
If you are building a longer plan, see the Shillong 3 day itinerary and the Guwahati 3 day itinerary.
What kinds of chargers exist and which suit a car?
Public chargers come in slow AC and faster DC forms. Many of the newer Northeast announcements target light electric vehicles, meaning scooters and small three-wheelers. The July 2025 A Plus Charge and Ather announcement says its chargers support the LECCS standard for light vehicles, so a car driver should not assume those points will work for them.
A third-party directory of Guwahati charging points that was checked for this guide listed 16 stations, with most of those shown belonging to a scooter maker's network and one to another operator. The listing was undated and is not an official count, which is another reason to verify directly. Ministry of Power guidelines from 2024 also encourage a common communication standard (OCPP) and a national database of public charging stations. If a national database is available when you travel, it will be more reliable than an old blog list.
How is the drive from Guwahati to Shillong?
The road is NH 6, a toll road according to one travel guide, and takes about 3 hours by car. The district administration says buses take about 3 hours with a stop at Nongpoh and shared taxis about 2 hours. Meghalaya has no railway line, and the nearest station is in Guwahati, 104 km from Shillong. Umroi airport, about 35 km from Shillong, was described by the district site as not yet fully operational, so confirm current flights before relying on it.
If you drive an EV, climb at a steady speed, avoid hard acceleration and use the descent to recover energy. See the road conditions and monsoon driving guide for weather and landslide context.
Where else can you charge: hotels, offices and malls?
Some hotels, malls and offices may offer chargers, and Meghalaya's 2021 plans included charging at government establishments. These private or semi-private points may not be open to the public. Ask in advance whether a charger is available, whether it is working, what connector it has and what it costs. Get the answer in writing if the plan depends on it.
What if you cannot find a working charger?
Have a fallback. Options include a slower charge at a hotel overnight, a different route that stays closer to Guwahati or switching to a petrol or diesel vehicle for the hill section. A short drive with a safe margin is better than a stranded car on a hill road.
Plan your trip
Before travelling, check live charger status in the operator app and with your hotel, and keep a petrol or diesel option in mind if you cannot confirm a stop. If you want a driver or car for the Guwahati to Shillong route, Palanquin can arrange one through its Guwahati to Shillong cab service.
Questions answered
Are there EV charging stations in Guwahati?
Yes. Guwahati has public EV charging points run by several operators, and government schemes sanctioned 10 stations in the city under FAME-II (reported in 2022) and a 10-charger Tata Power pilot (announced in 2023). The exact current list and uptime must be checked on a live map or operator app.
Can I charge an electric car between Guwahati and Shillong?
This guide could not verify a specific public fast charger on the NH 6 stretch, so do not rely on one. The route is about 100 km, so a car with a healthy battery can usually do a one-way trip, but plan to charge at both ends and confirm the charger first.
How far is Guwahati from Shillong and how long does it take?
Roughly 100 km, and about 2.5 to 3 hours by car depending on traffic, roadworks and weather. Shared taxis are quoted at about 2 to 3 hours.
Which EV charging companies operate in Guwahati and Shillong?
Reports from 2025 name A Plus Charge (a Guwahati-based operator) working with Ather Energy on fast chargers for light electric vehicles in Guwahati and Shillong. Tata Power signed an MoU with the Assam Government in 2023 for chargers in Guwahati. Check which of these serve cars before relying on them.
How much does public EV charging cost in India?
Under the Ministry of Power 2024 guidelines, service charge ceilings for public stations were reported as Rs 3 to 4 per unit for AC and Rs 11 to 13 per unit for DC fast charging, excluding GST and land cost. Actual prices at a station vary, so read the price in the operator's app.
