Aizawl, Reiek and Champhai Travel Guide: Permit, Routes and Sights

Plan a Mizoram trip to Aizawl, Reiek, Champhai and Dampa: the Inner Line Permit, how to reach from Guwahati, best months, food and border rules.

Aizawl, Mizoram's hill capital, is the base for most visits, with Reiek village an easy half-day trip and Champhai and Dampa Tiger Reserve needing a day or more each. Non-Mizo Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit before entering, and it can be applied for online. Go between September and May for the best weather and access.

Quick facts

  • Where: Mizoram, bordering Myanmar to the east and Bangladesh to the west.
  • Permit: Inner Line Permit for non-Mizo Indians; temporary ILP valid up to 15 days (Aizawl District, as of October 2026).
  • Airport: Lengpui, about 37 km from Aizawl (Incredible India).
  • Railway: Sairang, opened 13 September 2025, about 15 to 20 km from Aizawl.
  • Reiek: About 29 to 30 km from Aizawl, at about 1,548 m.
  • Champhai: About 194 km from Aizawl via NH 54 (Outlook Traveller, 2017).
  • Dampa Tiger Reserve: About 127 to 130 km from Aizawl; contact the forest department first.
  • Best months: September to May.
  • Time needed: 3 to 4 days for Aizawl, Reiek and Champhai; add 1 to 2 for Dampa.

Do you need a permit for Mizoram?

Yes, if you are not of Mizo origin. The Aizawl District website says the Inner Line Permit is required for entry, and it describes two kinds:

  • Temporary ILP: For visitors and tourists, valid up to 15 days. Wikipedia adds that it can be extended by another 15 days.
  • Regular ILP: Needs a sponsor who is a bona fide indigenous resident, with longer validity.

You can apply online at ilp.mizoram.gov.in, which the state launched in December 2019. The Aizawl District page also lists other ways to get a temporary pass:

  • Liaison offices in Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Kolkata and New Delhi
  • The security officer at Lengpui Airport, for air arrivals
  • The Sub-Deputy Commissioner at Bairabi or the SDO at Vairengte, for road entry

ILPs cannot be issued at the check gates on entry. Foreign nationals follow a different regime; see the Mizoram Inner Line Permit guide and the overview of permits across the region. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the Mizoram Home Department before booking.

What does the ILP system involve in practice?

When the state launched the online portal in December 2019, EastMojo reported several features: permits are issued as an A4 card with a QR code to make fakes easier to spot, and there are two apps, ILP Mizoram for the public and ILP Enforcer for police. It also reported that permit holders must report to a police check gate before leaving the state. Sponsors applying for non-tribal visitors have to submit full bio-data. These details date from 2019, so confirm the current process on the portal. Carry a printed or saved copy of the permit and original photo ID throughout the trip, including on day trips to Reiek and Champhai.

How do you reach Aizawl?

By air. Incredible India lists direct flights to Lengpui from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Imphal, Shillong and Agartala. Check current schedules, since routes change. The airport is about 37 km from the city.

By train. The Bairabi to Sairang line was inaugurated on 13 September 2025, linking Aizawl to the national network for the first time. Wikipedia lists the Guwahati to Sairang Express (15609/15610), a Kolkata service and a Sairang to Delhi Rajdhani Express. An institute travel page says Sairang is about an hour by road from Aizawl, with shared sumos from the station. Check IRCTC or NTES for current timetables.

By road. NH 54 runs through Silchar in Assam, which Incredible India places about 180 km from Aizawl. From Guwahati the road journey is very long, and an undated institute page mentions sumos and buses taking around 20 to 24 hours. For most travellers, flying or the train is simpler. The Guwahati gateway guide explains how Guwahati connects to the region.

What can you see in Aizawl?

Incredible India lists these:

  • Mizoram State Museum on Macdonald Hill, with artefacts and costumes. It is modest in size but gives a view of Mizo society.
  • Beraw Tlang, a cultural complex with traditional huts and performances.
  • Solomon's Temple, a landmark open to visitors.
  • Durtlang Hills, a steep hill with city views.
  • Bara Bazaar, the central market for produce, handwoven textiles and local food.

The city is built along ridges, and large churches are a feature of the skyline. Check opening hours ahead, especially if you plan sightseeing on a Sunday.

Why visit Reiek?

Reiek is a hill village about 29 km west of Aizawl, in Mamit District, at about 1,548 m. Outlook Traveller gives the drive as 45 minutes to an hour. It won the Gold category for Best Tourism Village in 2023, according to the Ministry of Tourism's rural tourism portal, which also notes a village tourism board.

What visitors do:

  • Look at traditional huts of Mizo sub-tribes, a chieftain's house and a bachelor dormitory (Outlook Traveller).
  • Climb or drive to the summit for views over forest and hills; Wikipedia says the Bangladesh plains are visible on a clear day.
  • Visit nearby caves, including those linked with the warrior Khuangchera at Ailawng.
  • See Nghahloh Dawr, a "shop without shopkeeper" (Incredible India).

The Anthurium Festival is held around Reiek and Ailawng. In 2026 it ran from 1 to 3 October, according to EastMojo, with flower shows, treks, folk dances and music. Dates move each year, so check with Mizoram Tourism.

What is there to do in Champhai?

Champhai is a valley town near the Myanmar border, about 194 km from Aizawl via NH 54, per a 2017 Outlook Traveller guide. Sumo taxis run from Aizawl. Plan a full day each way or break the journey. Highlights from that guide and Wikipedia:

  • Zokhawthar: A border trade town about 27 km from Champhai.
  • Murlen National Park: Known for birds and hoolock gibbons, in Champhai district.
  • Hnahlan: A village known for grapes and grape wine called Zawlaidi.
  • Khawbung: Home to the Mizo Poets' Square.

Rih Dil, a lake central to Mizo culture, is on the Myanmar side of the border.

Border rules around Champhai

In February 2024 the Ministry of Home Affairs announced it would scrap the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime. According to PTI (January 2025), a new system began on 1 January 2025: a border pass issued by Assam Rifles, valid up to 7 days, for people living within 10 km of the border, with Zokhawthar and Hnahlan among pilot sites. Tourists should not plan to cross. Check current government advisories on the border area before you travel, since the situation can change.

Is Dampa Tiger Reserve worth the trip?

Dampa is Mizoram's largest wildlife reserve, about 500 sq km, on the Bangladesh border in the west of the state. Incredible India puts it about 127 to 130 km from Aizawl and says visitors must first contact Mizoram's Department of Environment and Forest. It lists elephants, gaur, bears, tigers and hornbills among the wildlife, with October to April the best period. Sightings are never guaranteed, so treat it as a forest and birding trip.

How do you get around Aizawl, Reiek and Champhai?

Shared Sumo taxis connect Aizawl with Champhai, according to Outlook Traveller, and taxis are readily available from Aizawl to Reiek. Roads in the hills are winding, so allow extra time beyond the published distances, and avoid driving after dark where you do not know the road. The guide to monsoon driving in Northeast India explains why local drivers matter in the region. Mobile coverage and fuel availability can vary outside towns, so fill up in Aizawl or Champhai before long stretches.

What should you eat and which festivals should you know?

Incredible India lists bamboo shoot stew, pumpkin leaves stew and the Mizo thali, best sampled at Bara Bazaar. Chapchar Kut is a spring festival held in March. Thalfavang Kut and Ana Chachar Kut are other seasonal festivals, though dates are not fixed in the sources. For the season, Incredible India's monthly temperatures suggest cooler weather from November to February (lows of about 10 to 15 degrees Celsius). Compare with the month-by-month guide.

Plan your trip

A workable route is two nights in Aizawl with Reiek as a half-day trip, then two nights in Champhai, with Dampa added separately. Apply for the ILP before you travel, carry a printed copy and photo ID, and confirm flight and train schedules close to departure. For more routes, see the 7 to 10 day Northeast itinerary. Palanquin can arrange vehicles that start from Guwahati.
