Manas National Park Guide: Safari, Ranges, Season and How to Reach

Plan a visit to Manas National Park in Assam: Bansbari and Bhuyanpara ranges, safari slots, season, how to get there from Guwahati and what to check.

Manas National Park sits in western Assam, where the Himalayan foothills meet the Brahmaputra plains and the border with Bhutan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a tiger reserve and a biosphere reserve. Most visitors reach it from Guwahati in a long day or an overnight trip, entering through the Bansbari range or the Bhuyanpara range.

Quick facts

  • Main gates: Bansbari (central range, near Barpeta Road) and Bhuyanpara (eastern range, near Pathsala). Panbari is the western range.
  • Nearest railhead: Barpeta Road.

  • Best months: November to March. Check the opening date, which falls around October.
  • Permits: Entry tickets and safari permits at range offices, with photo ID.
  • Time needed: One full day minimum. Two nights lets you do multiple safaris.

What is Manas and why is it important?

Manas is a protected landscape of forest, grassland and river channels. UNESCO describes the core sanctuary as 39,100 hectares, part of a much larger tiger reserve of 283,700 hectares. The Manas River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, flows through the area and forms part of the India and Bhutan boundary.

The park is known for tigers, Indian rhinoceros, Asian elephants, swamp deer, clouded leopards, golden langurs and the pygmy hog. It is described as holding the world's only known wild pygmy hog population. UNESCO lists it as habitat for 22 of India's most threatened mammal species.

The park's recovery after years of unrest and poaching is a conservation story, but visitors should not expect the open-field viewing of Kaziranga. Forest is denser and animals can be shy.

How to reach Manas National Park from Guwahati

By road. Take NH 27 west from Guwahati towards Barpeta Road, then a link road about 20 to 25 km north to Bansbari. The Forest Department's advice quoted in recent coverage is to allow about 5 hours. Figures in older guides vary, so treat any single distance as approximate.

By rail. Barpeta Road is the railhead, connected to Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi routes. From there, taxis and shared vehicles go to the gate. Distances from Barpeta Road to Bansbari range from about 20 to 50 km in different sources. Ask your hotel to confirm.

By air. Fly to Guwahati (LGBI) and continue by road. For flight and rail options across the region, see how to reach Northeast India via Guwahati.

When does the park open, and what is the best season?

Manas closes during the monsoon. Reports for 2026 say the park reopened on 2 October 2026 for the season, and Kaziranga reopened on 3 October. Opening dates shift each year with rains and bridge repairs, so confirm with the Manas Tiger Reserve office or Assam Forest Department before booking.

  • November to March: Cooler, drier, best for wildlife and birds.
  • April: Warm and humid, with good birding but heat.
  • Monsoon: Park closed and roads can flood. See our monsoon driving guide.

Bansbari or Bhuyanpara: which range should you choose?

  • Bansbari is the most visited gateway, with the largest choice of lodges nearby and the closest access from Barpeta Road. Many visitors use it for jeep safaris.
  • Bhuyanpara is in the east, near Pathsala, and is the eastern gateway.
  • Panbari and Kuklung also operate, and some ranges close one day a week on rotation.

As of October 2026, recent coverage says Bansbari and Bhuyanpara are open for jeep safari. Conditions and closure days change, so confirm before you travel.

What are the safari options and timings?

  • Jeep safari. Jeep allocation is usually managed locally through a safari association. Typical slots reported for 2026 are 6 to 9 am, 10 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm. Confirm slot times and availability at the gate.
  • Mathanguri. The northern edge of the park, beside the Bhutan border, has a forest lodge and is known for river views. Permits and rules for going there have changed over time, so check with the Field Director's office in Barpeta Road.
  • River rafting. A rafting stretch has been offered between Mathanguri and Bansbari by the forest department and private operators. Confirm whether it is running.
  • Walks and birding. Guided trails exist near some lodges. Never walk in the forest without a forest department guide.

Entry and jeep fees change often. Older guides quote specific rupee amounts, but they are dated, so ask the range office for current rates. Carry cash and keep a photo ID.

Where to stay near Manas

Choices include government lodges, private jungle lodges near Bansbari, community-run cottages and tea estate bungalows in the area. Book ahead from November to February. Staying close to the gate saves early-morning travel time.

Rules, safety and etiquette

  • Stay in the vehicle during safaris unless the guide says otherwise.
  • Keep voices low, do not feed animals and do not use flash.
  • Carry no plastic you cannot take out again.
  • The park is near an international border. Carry ID and follow instructions from forest staff and security personnel.
  • Check local news and the forest department for any advisories before travelling.

How does Manas fit into an Assam itinerary?

Manas works as a western Assam stop before or after Guwahati. See our Guwahati 3 day itinerary for a city base, and the Kaziranga wildlife guide for a contrasting grassland park.

What is the conservation story at Manas?

Manas has had a difficult recent history. UNESCO placed it on the World Heritage in Danger list in 1992 and removed it in 2011, after recognising progress in protecting the site. The park was enlarged in 2008, and it is part of a wider transboundary landscape that continues into Bhutan.

Conservation reports mention a captive breeding and release programme for the pygmy hog, with nine animals released in 2024 and the population reported at 63. Treat this as a reported figure and not a count you can see on a visit. The Bodoland Territorial Region administers the area where the park lies, so local community and forest staff are a large part of how the park runs, and visitors support this through local guides and lodges.

What does a two day Manas plan look like?

Day 1. Leave Guwahati early, reach Barpeta Road by late morning, and check in near Bansbari. Take an afternoon jeep safari slot if the park is open.

Day 2. Take the first morning slot, which is generally best for wildlife activity, and return to Guwahati in the afternoon. If you want a second safari, stay a third night so you do not rush the drive back.

If you only have a single day, leave Guwahati before dawn, but remember that the drive alone can take around 5 hours each way.

What should you pack for Manas?

  • Neutral clothing, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.
  • A rain jacket, since showers are common near the monsoon months.
  • Cash and photo ID, as card and mobile payments may not work at remote gates.
  • Water and snacks, since there are few shops near the gate.

Plan your trip

Choose November to March, base yourself near Bansbari or Bhuyanpara, and book safari slots through the range office or a reputable local operator. If you want a driver or car for the Guwahati to Manas route, Palanquin can arrange a driver or car for this route (see Assam services).
